The workshop will cover choice of accompaniment styles & instrument, different approaches to accompaniment, finding chords, singing techniques, arrangement & presentation. Steeped in traditional music since childhood, Ben is a dazzling player of American, Swedish, Irish & Klezmer styles. He plays with his father Tom Paley in the New Deal String Band & also with Sara Grey & Kieron Means. The workshop will explore tunes from the USA, Sweden & Ireland. Joe has inherited the song & storytelling traditions of the North Carolina Appalachians. He plays guitar & banjo. His account of life in the small village of Sodom Laurel is fascinating & often surprising. The workshop will cover 'Old Love Songs & Ballads from the Western North Carolina Mountains' & the oral tradition that preserved them. There will be plenty of opportunities to sing the songs. A work book with lyrics & information & a CD of field recordings will be provided for each participant.
